Philly.com had an interesting piece this morning suggesting that it’s time for the Italian Market to change its name. Unlike when Chink’s Steaks on Torresdale Ave in NE Philly changed its name because some people were offended, the writer of the article stated that the reason for changing the name would be because it’s not just Italian businesses any more. There are lots of Latin American and Mexican places as well.
It’s a pretty interesting proposal. The Italian Market is historic and world-renowned. I grew up going to the Italian Market with my grandparents, and love taking people there who have never been. However, one cannot help but notice that once one goes past Washington Avenue heading south on 9th Street, the businesses are suddenly no longer “Italian.”
As a half-Italian man, I’m conflicted. What do you think, LOLadelphia readers? Should the Italian Market change its name, or embrace history and keep it the same?
