For the last five years I have been working for the School District of Philadelphia, and in every school I’ve gone in I have seen a framed poster of famous graduates of the district. The poster always bothered me, but I could never figure out why despite seeing it virtually every day for five years. Today, I finally figured out why I don’t like this poster.
Two people featured on it are Howard Eskin and Wilson Goode. Eskin is a radio host, now a sports reporter for FOX 29. He is known for kissing the ass of everyone on the Eagles, yelling at people on his radio show, and for disliking bloggers. Perhaps more disturbing is the inclusion of former mayor Wilson Goode. Goode’s legacy as mayor is being the guy who authorized the bombing of the MOVE compound in 1985, and still managed to get reelected in 1991. The MOVE bombing killed many people including children, and destroyed an entire city block on Osage Avenue near Cobbs Creek Park. When the city had to rebuild the destroyed homes, they cut corners with shady contractors and today many of the homes remain abandoned. There are many to blame for the MOVE disaster, but Goode was the guy who authorized the bombing in the first place.
So many people have graduated from Philly public schools, and the rest of the poster is good. Including Eskin and Goode though…that was a mistake.
