My heart skipped a beat when I saw on my Twitter feed that our friends at NewsWorks (an organization powered by our PBS affiliate WHYY) did a whole article about the jawn that is the word “jawn.” The article nails everything about this versatile word, such as the fact that it is uniquely Philly and that it can be used to mean virtually everything and anything.
We’re big proponents of this word, so much so that I even own a shirt that says it nice and big. The best thing about the NewsWorks article is that it points out that the word has become a unique source of Philadelphia pride similar to cheesesteaks, the Liberty Bell, and the smell of rotting garbage during the summertime.
Kudos, NewsWorks! You nailed this jawn. For other great Philly lingo (including our own article about the word jawn), check out our compilation of jawns.
